Welcome

Hello everyone and welcome to AS Media Studies!

We are very excited to be following a new brief this year of an opening sequence to a film genre of your choice. Hope you don't find blogger too annoying everyone masters it in the end and it's how we send all your work to the examiners.

Miss Shuttle and Miss Brookes are always at hand to help so don't hesitate to ask.

Good luck in all your A level choices.

Karina:
Uses and gratification theory: Detailed information about what the theory means and some generalised examples about how the theory can be applied to everyday situations. Try to be more specific and suggest what this theory shows about your own consumption of film/media. Do you use film in this way to meet specific needs? How can you use this to assist with your own film opening?
Still image analysis: Uploaded notes from the lesson to give details about the semiotics of the still. You should include the image alongside it (ask for them If you cannot find them!) Consider what you would use in a still to assist with the audience’s understanding of the genre.  Your own image: detailed analysis of the decisions taken and the possible effects for the audience. Consider more information about the setting and how this links directly to the genre and narrative of the piece.
Opening scene conventions: You have used your notes to tell us what was found in the individual openings. Try to give a general overview about what needs to go into all openings – and use videos/clips where possible, so examiners can see what has been analysed.
Film Institution: Excellent detail and analysis of the institutions shown. You have picked out the key aspects of the companies and been able to assess why they are similar/different. You have highlighted how popular and successful the companies are and considered the films’ popularity. Later on, use this to assist with your wider company knowledge – what type of production company will you use to produce your opening? Why?

Film Institutions: Detailed and clear comparisons between the high-budget and low-budget companies, considering budget and the films made by each company. Write down how you would improve the images.  Consider in more detail how the mise-en-scene within the shots help to create the right effect/tone for the audience and what they will understand from the shot. Add notes from The Shining/You’ve got Mail still image analysis.
Opening scene analysis: You have explained the effects of the opening scenes and discussed why different aspects have been used within the sequence.
